At 7:50 a.m. Mondays, the coffee at the Station 618 Senior Center begins to brew, and ice and water are set out in various locations as participants gather at the door.

Once the doors open at 8 a.m., the participants head to the workout room to begin 15 to 30 minutes of exercise, followed by reading the newspaper, sipping coffee and chatting with friends.

The lobby area fills with “good morning” greetings, as the sound of laughter and stories from the past weekend can be heard.

As more people continue to arrive at Station 618, some wait for the doors of Santa Fe Crossing across the alleyway to open at 9 a.m. Yet others head to the cardio and strength exercise class, workout room, ceramics room or computer lab.

As the week goes on, this sort of activity continues, with only slight changes in the schedule from day to day.

Santa Fe Crossing and Station 618 are senior centers for adults 55 and older. Together, they offer an array of programs and activities.

On particular days, such as Tuesday afternoons, the sound of Latin-inspired music with some modern-day pop music fills Station 618′s activity room as participants perform Zumba — a dance exercise class — with instructor Stephanie Barnes.

On Friday afternoons, this same room has up to 40 bridge players who are intensely involved in their card games. On Thursday afternoons in the lobby of Station 618, which is at 618 S. Chadbourne St., the clacking of tiles hitting the table can be heard as men and women play mah-jongg.

The ceramic room is open each day under the direction of volunteer coordinators. Those who venture into the room can learn to create a ceramic item from start to finish. The coordinators offer an abundance of molds to choose from and even have some paints for rookies.

Santa Fe Crossing, 702 S. Chadbourne St., has many activities going on throughout the week as well. Every day from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the dining room hosts more than 100 people who come to enjoy a hot, nutritious lunch.

On Tuesdays in Santa Fe Crossing’s activity room, seniors interested in art can work on personal projects, or the volunteer coordinators can help them learn the various strokes in painting. Other arts and crafts activities throughout the week include crochet on Wednesdays and sewing on Fridays.

The activity room also hosts bingo on Mondays and Fridays. Other daily activities include playing dominoes, completing jigsaw puzzles or just socializing with one another.

Throughout the year, the senior centers also hold special events. Station 618′s activity room is the home of evening dances throughout the year, during which country and western bands and solo performers play live music in a smoke-free, nonalcoholic event for $5 per person, with light refreshments provided.

During the summertime, an ice cream social gives the seniors a chance to cool off and meet new people or even reacquaint with old friends.

In November, as the holiday season approaches, the center hosts a Thanksgiving luncheon with more than 200 seniors enjoying a turkey and dressing lunch. The annual holiday bazaar sale in December showcases ceramic and sewing items the senior participants have made throughout the year.

Hours of operation are different for each center. Santa Fe Crossing is open Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Station 618 is open Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays until 7 p.m.

During those extended hours, our Zumba instructor teaches a class for the public at 5:45 p.m. for $4 per person. Also during our extended hours, the public can take advantage of the workout room for $3 per person.

Alberto Perez started out as a street performer and then an aerobics teacher in Colombia, making extra cash on the side teaching the wives of businessmen how to dance in nightclubs in his hometown, Cali.

Today, he stands at the centre of the Zumba exercise craze, having helped transform Zumba Fitness, a private company, into a rapidly growing fitness empire with heavyweight investor backing.

“I’m not a businessman, but I knew this had the potential to be something special,” said Perez, who along with two Colombian associates founded the Miamibased company.

Zumba, a Latin danceinspired aerobic workout, has exploded from a Miami gym phenomenon to infomercial and DVD-smash hit into a global craze with some 12 million people taking classes every week in at least 125 countries.

Zumba Fitness now boasts being the largest branded fitness program in the world.

Started on a shoestring budget in a Miami garage nearly 11 years ago, Zumba Fitness now has more than 200 employees.

A pair of New York investment firms are betting the craze has staying power.

What began as a company focused on fitness has evolved into a lifestyle and entertainment brand combining e-commerce, apparel and music, and a sought-after outlet for superstars such as hip-hop artists Pitbull and Wyclef Jean and reggaeton singer Don Omar who have turned to Zumba to promote their music.

The accidental instructor

Zumba got its start by chance in the 1980s.

Perez, who is known as Beto, was eking out a living as a street performer and salsa and merengue nightclub dancer known for his boyish model looks and muscular physique.

One day the owner of a nearby gym called and asked if Perez could stand in for an injured aerobics teacher. He agreed – but didn’t mention he had never done aerobics and rushed out and bought a copy of Jane Fonda’s Workout Book.

His fitness career was born.

Months later, getting ready for a class, Perez forgot his aerobics music. Instead, he put on his own merengue and salsa tapes and improvised dance moves for a workout, creating what today is known as Zumba.

It proved to be a hit and he quickly developed a loyal following before he moved to Bogota, where he briefly worked as a choreographer with pop star Shakira.

In 1999, Perez packed up and headed to Miami, speaking no English but hoping to make a breakthrough in the Latin-flavoured U.S. city with his new dance exercise class.

He struggled before eventually building up a large, adoring fan base of mostly Colombian expatriate women, including the mother of Alberto Perlman.

Then a technology entrepreneur, Perlman lost his job in the dot-com bust two years later and was struggling with what career move to make next. He co-founded Zumba Fitness and is now its CEO. “My mom had been taking his classes for years,” he said. “She would tell me about this amazing class but I never paid attention. When the bubble burst, I went to have dinner at her house and she kept saying ‘Talk to Beto, maybe you guys could start a gym.’ “

“I said I’d meet with him but I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with him,” Perlman recalled. But after watching a class, he came up with the idea for a new fitness video he hoped could be an infomercial success.

This Zumba Fitness Core preview with Sara Underwood from the E3 2012 floor show should get everyone in the mood to work it!  She teams up with Zumba trainer Gina Grant to show you how interactive this version of Zumba is using the motion technology of the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii consoles.

Majesco Entertainment focuses on your core with this release which is what really separates this title from other Zumba games.  Don’t worry, it’s not all work, there is plenty of play, dancing and licensed music to keep your heart rate up.  You also have the option to select which different types of Zumba classes you want to take.  In a typical Zumba fitness class you can burn up to 1,000 calories but with Zumba Fitness Core, depending on how long you can keep the groove,  you can burn much more.

According to Sara Underwood the experience was “hard but fun” and although she was talking about the game that is indeed.. what she said.

The fundraising kickoff to bring video capabilities to A Child’s Place Westmoreland, Part of the Mercy Health System, swiveled into place last night with a large Zumba program at the Hempfield Recreation Center.

Dance Amor Fitness owner Debbie Hedges organized the event to help raise $14,000 needed for video equipment used to record the first interview of abused children and mentally challenged adults.

This needed equipment spares the victim the trauma of multiple interviews and the inconvenience and expense of heading to Pittsburgh.

“Right now (the victims) have to go to Pittsburgh and they are not always getting there, Hedges said. “We will keep the event open for additional donations until the funds are raised.

“I love this cause because all the money goes to help the community, Hedges said.

She had corporate teams signed up, plus donations, from the Westmoreland County District Attorney’s Office, the Lower Burrell Police Department and the Penn Township Police Department.

“I just love police departments, she said. “They don’t make a lot of money, but they support good causes. It is a community service.

Other supporters include the Rialto Café in Greensburg and state police officers from Fayette County.

Every year, more than 150 abused children from Westmoreland County could be using this needed video equipment, said Joan Mills, manager of A Child’s Place at Mercy’s local satellite in North Huntingdon.

There are three interview rooms in Pittsburgh, but the equipment is not portable. There is one interview room at A Child’s Place at the Norwin Shopping Center in North Huntingdon.

“Another 75 cases a year are from Fayette County, with sporadic calls from Somerset and as far as Johnstown, Mills said. “It takes a special kind of child to step forward … to have the trust and courage.

“Child abuse is a public safety and a public health issue and we all have to own this.

Mills stressed the professional training of staff members who conduct the interviews, the efforts of law enforcement and those who are helping to raise funds for the Westmoreland site.

“This is very heartening to our staff, she said.

“I can’t commend the District Attorney’s Office enough under John Peck. He is very sensitive to these cases, she said.

The event featured a large-group Zumba, which uses Latin rhythms and movements for a fun fitness program. Four instructors used the entire three basketball courts of the recreation center, donated by Hempfield Township for the cause.

Presenting sponsors include Excela Health, Carlow University and DJ L.A.C.E., with corporate sponsors Integral Ballroom of Murrysville and Bononi Company, a Greensburg law firm.

A banner is now hanging in the recreation center with all the names of contributors. Later donations will be added to the http://www.zumbawithdeb.com website.

Hedges can be reached at danceamorfitness@hotmail.com.

MIAMI, June 13, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ –
According to a new Facebook survey by Zumba Fitness, the global multimedia fitness leader and creator of the acclaimed Zumba® dance-fitness workout, “Men in Black 3″ star, Will Smith, by far has the best moves on the dance floor. The star, known internationally for his work both in film and music, proved that after all these years, he can still get jiggy with it – beating out tough competition from the likes of Mario Lopez, John Travolta and the man with all the moves, Mick Jagger.

In honor of the upcoming Father’s Day holiday, Zumba Fitness compiled a list of ten celebrity dads, choosing the fathers whose fancy footwork has helped secure them a name in the dancing arena. Once chosen, voting was opened up to the public – allowing consumers to choose which of the ten fathers deserved the top spot in the dancing category.

“Whether you’re male or female, child or adult, dancing remains as one of the world’s most popular activities for getting fit and having fun,” said Beto Perez, creator of the Zumba Program. “With Father’s Day right around the corner, we wanted to pay tribute to all of those dads whose moves on the dance floor have inspired millions of people around the world to break out their dancing shoes and join the party!”

With more than 1,000 fan votes, the following list reveals how Zumba Fitness dance enthusiasts rank their favorite Hollywood fathers’ dancing skills:

1. Will Smith – 41% – Exploding into the public eye in the 1980s, Smith danced, rapped and acted his way to fame – becoming a household name with his successful run in “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and following it up with roles in “Independence Day,” “Ali,” and the “Men in Black” trilogy

2. Mario Lopez – 15% – Lopez danced into our lives as A.C. Slater on “Saved By The Bell” and has been dancing ever since – from “Dancing with the Stars” and “America’s Best Dance Crew” to “Extra” and Broadway’s “A Chorus Line”

3. John Travolta – 14% – Grooving his way into the spotlight in the 1970s with roles in “Grease” and “Saturday Night Live,” Travolta has been ‘staying alive’ ever since – dancing through the decades with one hit movie after another

4. Ricky Martin – 13% – From Menudo and pop superstardom to raving reviews in Broadway’s “Evita,” Martin salsa’d his way to international fame, while showing us just how ‘loca’ life could be through his sensual moves on the dance floor

5. Usher – 8% -Rising to fame in the 1990s with his 6-time platinum album, “My Way,” Usher is now internationally known as the DJ who’s smooth voice and slick dance style has had us falling in love again and again, and again

6. Jon Bon Jovi – 3% – He may give love a bad name, but Bon Jovi’s career has not been livin’ on a prayer. Ever since hitting the music scene in the 1980s, this rock star has been serving up timeless hits that will have even the worst dancers up out of their seat, and rocking out on the floor

7. Hugh Jackman – 2% – From Broadway to the silver screen and beyond, Jackman is one of Hollywood’s hottest triple threats – singing, dancing and entertaining his way into our hearts with films such as “X-Men” to upcoming adaptation of “Les Miserables”

8. Kevin Bacon – 2% – As one of Hollywood’s most recognized actors, Bacon has had a sizzling hot career, starring in cinematic classics such as National Lampoon’s Animal House, Tremors and Footloose, where he showed off that in addition to his acting chops, he also had some impressively, fancy footwork

9. Tom Cruise – 1% – From the moment Cruise first busted his signature moves in the 1983 classic “Risky Business,” the American public was hooked! Nearly 30 years later, this Hollywood top gun is still stealing our attention with lead roles in films like the upcoming summer blockbuster, “Rock of Ages”

10. Mick Jagger – 1% – If Rock Roll had royalty, Jagger would be the King.
