Monthly Archives: January 2012

Since Wii Fit in 2008, fitness games have established themselves as evergreen titles for a new type of gaming consumer.Zumba Fitness’ chart dominance over the summer allayed fears that the industry was losing the expanded audience cultivated by Wii Fit and Just Dance.

And it is around New Year that workout games sales really take off. Much like in the DVD and books market, the Christmas season’s many excesses triggers a public demand for self-improvement products. Dieting guides, exercise videos and gym equipment become must-have items – and games publishers aren’t about to miss this window of opportunity.

This year, games companies are using the annual fitness blitz to give their Q4 titles a second lease of life at retail.

REVAMPED WORKOUTS

Microsoft, for example, has already been advertising Kinect Sports: Season Two and Dance Central 2 – games that wouldn’t be traditionally considered workout titles – as new ways to shed the pounds.

“Fitness is front of mind for a lot of people in January,” explains Stephen McGill, director of Xbox and Entertainment. “We’re running an activity with a celebrity trainer to show people how they can use Kinect as part of a healthy lifestyle.

“We’re very proud of the success of these games, both of which have calorie counting modes. Ubisoft’s Your Shape: Fitness Evolved franchise has also been enormously popular, so it’s fantastic to see people enjoying fitness experiences that are exclusive to Kinect.”

Ubisoft’s senior PR manager Louise Marchant adds: “The first Fitness Evolved was the best-selling fitness title on Kinect, and we are looking to build on that success this year with a solid marketing campaign for Your Shape Fitness Evolved 2012.”Even mega-seller Zumba Fitness is getting a shot in the arm with more ads planned for the sequel.

“Zumba is a powerhouse of a brand throughout the world with over 10m class participants each week, so it was a natural progression to see the same success with the video game,” said 505’s senior product manager Juliette Green. “The momentum behind Zumba is certainly not going to stop.”

DANCE OFF

Zumba Fitness is a perfect storm of exercise and dancing. Could it be that its appeal is based on the popularity of dance games rather than its fitness benefits?

After all, the genre stole the thunder from Wii Fit as the industry’s blue-eyed broader market success story. And with Dance Central 2 and the Just Dance series incorporating calorie counters and other metrics, has the swell of dance games cannabilised the sales of fitness titles?

No, says Sony’s UK?product manager John Aikins, who explains: “Dance games provide an experience that engages the cardio vascular system while fitness games incorporate a well rounded fitness experience with resistance, plyometric and cardio elements.

“Dance games can be a great entry point into incorporating fitness in your lifestyle.”

Ubisoft brand manager Rachael Grant adds: “There is a place for dance games and fitness games to sit alongside each other. The popularity of dance games is merely expanding the audience, rather than taking away from fitness games.”

NEW CONTENDERS

That major companies like THQ and Sony have entered the fitness market in the last year is further proof that the industry still sees strong potential in the genre.

With its new PlayStation Move motion controller now in its second year, Sony launched a brand new franchise in November.

“Move Fitness offers a fun and exciting entry point into the genre, and provides us with a significant point of interest during January,” says Aikins. “This has helped to establish Move Fitness as a credible fitness product.”

Meanwhile, THQ adapted an already well-established brand to serve as a fitness title with UFC Personal Trainer.

THQ’s senior product marketing manager Mark Fisher says: “UFC Personal Trainer is a unique offering that appeals to a wider audience than the generic fitness title. The New Year sales window is a great opportunity to re-engage consumers with the product, so we are focusing our efforts to ensure that UFC Personal Trainer maximises its potential during this busy period.”

FIGHTING FIT

But few titles have been able to match the success of Zumba or even Wii Fit. And publisher back catalogues are teaming with the early titles in fitness franchises that never truly got off the ground.

Could Zumba’s triumph be hiding the real situation: that the public’s appetite for workout games has dissipated?

“Anything will get a bit stale if you just keep putting out the same game time after time, but we’ve come a long way since the first console fitness titles,” says Marchant. “Fitness is like any other genre: it needs to develop and evolve to provide something new and relevant for the consumer.”

McGill says: “The real key to success, beyond innovation and approachability, is about making it fun. People turn to fitness games because they offer an enjoyable way to stay healthy and within the warmth and comfort of their own home.

“The fact that Zumba Fitness topped the charts for 13 weeks this year tells me there is very much still a market for these games.”

With these companies and so many more finding new ways to get consumers exercising through video games, retailers can expect a strong sales rush for fitness titles over the next month, not to mention in the years to come.

As we age, it’s important to live a healthy lifestyle and stay
in shape, but the idea of hitting the gym is not a top priority for
most older adults.

A great way to get motivated about exercising is to join
Berks
Encore-Wernersville
center’s Zumba class.

Peggy Kuzma, 70, of Bern Township, started the class after a
friend recommended it.

“It’s fun, and I’m losing inches,” Peggy said. “It’s cardio, and
it’s just the exercise that you need.”

So far, the Zumba class in Wernersville has had16 people between
60 and 85 years old join. The cost is $4, and classes are Tuesdays
from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Because the class is based on the
Zumba Gold fitness program, the dance moves are modified to a
slower pace.

The Reading
center
also offers Zumba Gold every Monday at 11 a.m. for
$4.

Participants reap the benefits of cardiovascular and bone
strengthening as well as preserving and restoring motion. As a
result, the ability to do everyday activities becomes easier.

“Some of the people start out by sitting in chairs doing the
routines, and now they’re up and moving at the normal pace,” says
Michelle Kapp, certified Zumba Gold instructor. “They’ve become
more active and they have fun doing it.”

All of the Berks Encore centers have a variety of fitness
classes, including Tai Chi, aerobics, “Sit Get Fit,” and
more. All are taught by certified instructors and are modified for
older adults.

Come out and see how much fun Zumba can be. Please contact the
centers directly for more information about their programs.

A complete schedule of all available programs is included in
each issue of Berks Encore News.

About Berks Encore

The mission of Berks Encore is to engage the community to enable
older adults to achieve a better quality of life by providing a

Anyone who has ever stayed up watching late-night television probably has seen the various infomercials scattered among the cable channels.

The commercials pitch everything from tummy toners, shaking weights, body-slenderizing clothing and “appetite-suppressing” powder that users sprinkle on their food like salt.

Then there is that one Latin-dance fitness video that claims to turn exercise into one big party: Zumba Fitness.

Everyone in the video seems to be having such a great time. The music is fast-paced and lively. The routines are combo of Latin dance steps and hip-hop moves.

But Zumba Fitness also seems to be popping up everywhere else, not just on TV.

Several area health clubs, park districts and independent instructors offer Zumba classes. There are Zumba DVDs, a Zumbawear clothing line, Zumba video games, AquaZumba, a Zumba training academy and a soon-to-be launched Zumbatomic program for children.

The Zumba craze “is huge,” said Sabrina Patino, a Lake in the Hills dance instructor.

Zumba Classes at Huntley High School

In September, Patino began leading Zumba Fitness classes from 7 to 8 p.m. every Monday at Huntley High School, 13719 Harmony Road. A steady group of loyal “dancers” turns out each week to burn calories and have a good time.

The dance steps are easy to learn, and the routines can be adjusted for all intensity levels, Patino said.

“It’s fun,” said Ruth Amunada, 61, of Lake in the Hills. “You are working out, but it doesn’t feel like work because it’s fun.”

Prior to joining the Huntley class, Amunada participated in Zumba classes at other locations. In between the Monday night sessions in Huntley, Amunada exercises to the Zumba Fitness DVDs at home, she said.

Patty Lev, 54, of Lake in the Hills, also dances to Zumba at home, but she finds Patino’s class at Huntley High motivating.

“I enjoy doing Zumba,” Lev said. “It keeps me moving, and it’s fun to be with other people.”

Patino, 37, a mother of two, also works full-time as an interpreter. She trained in dance from a young age and was a dance instructor in Chicago before moving to the suburbs.

Her dance background combined with a bachelor’s degree in Hispanic arts made becoming a Zumba Fitness instructor a perfect fit.

“We do salsa, Cumbia, hip-hop, flamenco and some belly-dancing moves,” Patino said. “Next month, I’m traveling to London to become certified to teach Zumbatomic for kids.”

Patino rents the space at Huntley High and charges a drop-in rate of $5 per participant. She also teaches at Centegra Health Bridge in Crystal Lake and at Mixin Mingle, 231 Main St., Woodstock.

February Special

To help break winter’s cabin fever, Patino said she is offering a 2-for-1, bring-a-friend special for anyone attending the next two Huntley sessions on Feb. 6 and 13.

Alberto “Beto” Perez started the Zumba Fitness craze in 2001.

The program has grown to become the world’s largest dance fitness program with more than 12 million people taking weekly Zumba classes in 110,000 locations throughout 125 countries, according to the Zumba.

Our choreography for Oh My God by Usher available on I-Tunes. We did in Zumba class and its a great routine to use for all fitness levels

The local Zumba instructors did it again.

The Zumba instructors held a fundraiser for three-year-old Marli Gerber at the Palmyra Community Center on Sunday. Zumba is an exhilarating, effective, easy-to-follow, Latin-inspired, calorie-burning dance.

The Zumba instructors recently raised a total of $3,500 for the Pilato Family of Webster.

Back in November, Marli was complaining that her stomach hurt and her dad Shawn was rubbing her stomach and he found a hard mass and just thought she needed to go to the bathroom. The next day, realizing it was something more, they took her to her pediatrician and he sent them to Strong where they admitted her.

After doing many tests, they came to the conclusion it was a Wilms Tumor and that she was going to need it removed. The surgery took place the Tuesday before Thanksgiving to have the tumor removed, as well as her left kidney, adrenal gland and lymph node.

She was in recovery for 10 days before coming home. She started chemo about a week later and has to continue for 20 weeks after the first dose.

“Just seeing Marli get better every day really helped us through it. She stayed so strong and positive the whole time,” said Shawn, as he, and the other family members, were being overcome with emotion as he was relating the events.

“Marli goes to treatment once a week. We’re about halfway through right now. We just look forward to getting all the medicine and everything over with. We look forward to her just being healthy again.”

Shawn and wife Jessica, along with Marli and their other children – 13-year-old Brittani, and 6-year-old Kadin, and newborn Aisley – were grateful for the support from the community as over 200 people turned out.

“We’re so thankful and overwhelmed from a community that would love us this much, and that they care about my daughter this much that they would come out to help,” said Shawn. “It’s just amazing, very warm.

“We’re doing awesome. We really couldn’t be any happier or better. Marli is doing great. We just had a new baby girl (Aisley) this past Tuesday.”

The Gerber family resides in Palmyra.

“Right from the first day that we found out what Marli had, there were so many people who were there for us,” Shawn said. “We’ve met people we don’t even know.

“The doctors, the nurses, the surgeons, everybody at Strong (Memorial Hospital) have been so unbelievable. It’s very exciting to see this.”

Shawn added, “I just want to thank God for everything that he does for us. He loves all of us. I just thank Him so much for giving everybody who has taken care of Marli.”

NEW CLASSES – Zumba Fitness is coming to the village in February giving people the opportunity to party themselves into shape at the Latin-inspired dance fitness party.

Classes will be held in the village hall on Saturday mornings from 11am to 12pm, starting on February 4.

Licensed Zumba instructor Deborah Hickson will be happy to give further details and cost if contacted on 07832 295845 or deb@zumba-lincs.co.uk

PARISH PRECEPT – The main item on the agenda at the January meeting of the parish council was setting the precept for the coming year, when planned expenditure had to be considered and provided for during 2012 to 2013.

The clerk had prepared the draft budget of allowances of routine payments and also provided actual costs for the year 2010 to 2011 and payments to date for 2011 to 2012 for comparison to help the discussion.

This was the first time the new council had set a precept and, while allowing for increases in the maintenance costs as set out by the clerk in the draft budget, the council approved it without change and the precept was set at £5,651 with no increase from that of 2011 to 2012.

The councillors were pleased costs could be contained at the same level as last year despite the heavy burden for a small community of maintaining a closed churchyard and providing and maintaining a cemetery, in addition to the upkeep of sport and recreational facilities in the village.

Applications had been made for grants during the year to support the work of the council, which has enabled the purchase of a bench and picnic table for the recreation area, a community shelter for the lay by, a bigger notice board for the display of parish council documents, with the smaller one re-sited by the cemetery, allotment and recreation areas plus the replacement of the cemetery path, which had become dangerous and a hazard for visitors.
